With T & I living up the round, the Kingsway strip in Glen Waverley is like a local oasis, a sneaky sojourn when I simply can’t be bothered cooking. The existing Mocha Jo’s now has a separate burger bar serving up American style fair, complete with screens and heaters for those chilly winter months.

The Texan- Wagyu, double cheese, lettuce, onion rings, Jack Daniel’s BBQ sauce, fried Jalapenos, tomato, bacon, pickles and mayo – $15.5

This burger sounds and looks menacing. But the balance is great here. The patty is juicy but not too fatty, and the acid of the jalapenos and the fresh salad balance the cheese and onion rings. The BBQ sauce isn’t too sweet either adding depth, without overpowering. I have a reasonably solid constitution, but I’ve learnt over the years to listen to the snarky comments that come back from my gut, post meal. Today, mine was strangely silent, content and happy, despite the assault of flavours and richness. This burger walks the tightrope of decadence and flavour, without teetering. It’s the first burger I’ve had for a long time to do so, whilst maintaining a shopping list of ingredients that would make a modified GTR owner gawk.

The BBC – Fried Chicken, US cheese, lettuce and M.J.’s sauce – $11.9

With a baby bub on the way, and a tiny stomach to fill, T’s choice was simpler. The fried chicken had great crunch and a good amount of spice. The creamy sauce offset against the chicken, complimenting the cheese with a little fresh salad. Simple, well cooked, juicy and perfect.

Arnold Palmer – 3 Parts Iced Tea, 1 Part Sprite – $5.5

For those that baulk at the idea of a crisp beer, here’s the perfect soft drink refresher. Light, not too sweet , bright and refreshing.

Mocha Jo’s Burger Bar has done a lot with a little. The menu is consistently well thought out, and the burgers balanced and well cooked. With nice large sized chips and a battery of great dipping sauces, it’s made our list of places to visit on a cheat night. Well worth trying.
