The Stables of Como

The Stables of Como Location: Corner Williams Road & Lechlade Avenue, South Yarra & Toorak, Melbourne, VIC Contact: 03 9827 6886 Set amongst the lush surrounds of the heritage-listed Como House and gardens in South Yarra, The Stables of Como brings a surprisingly relaxed, country-style space to one of inner-city Melbourne’s poshest suburbs. DSCF0697 The cafe itself occupies the old stables of the gardens; a light and airy, white-washed space that sprawls out into a plush green courtyard and manicured greens. Dogs are welcome (expect to see a few insta-famous pups on the weekend) and one should expect a wait – it seems like everyone is aware that this spot is a bit of bliss on a sunny afternoon.

I am constantly astounded by the quality and diversity of food that is offered in Melbourne. Having recently returned from travelling and working overseas (where I had the pleasure of dining at quite a few Michelin-starred restaurants), I can comfortably say that Melbourne offers some of the best restaurants and cafes in the world, which, believe it or not, I much preferred over their Michelin-starred counterparts. This past month I have been very ‘busy’ re-acquainting my palette with Melbourne food. Here are a few favourites that I’d happily eat at (over and over) again: Hinoki Japanese Pantry Location: 279 Smith Street, Fitzroy, VIC 0065 Contact: 03 9417 4531 IMG_20150215_174219 Hinoki Japanese Pantry on Urbanspoon Fonda Mexican Location: 248 Swan Street, Richmond, VIC 3121 Contact: 03 9429 0085 IMG_20150224_204240 Fonda Mexican on Urbanspoon Jinda Thai Location: 7 Ferguson St, Abbotsford, VIC 3067 Contact: 03 9419 5899 Processed with VSCOcam with c2 preset Jinda Thai Restaurant on Urbanspoon

Bistro Bakini Location: 568 St Kilda Road, Melbourne VIC 3004 Contact: 03 9521 7774 Avoiding the increasing hustle-and-bustle of the CBD, Bistro Bakini is situated along the breezy calm banks of St Kilda Road. The intended locale allows the restaurant to marry its hearty comforting Italian fare and relaxing alcoholic/caffeinated beverages to a setting perfect for those seeking to unwind. DSC_0143 DSC_0141 DSC_0137 DSC_0180 Entering the restaurant, the layout and ambiance of the place speaks casual chill-out. Complete with a long bar, the comfiest plush leather seats in the front room, an open-plan kitchen in the back room, a quiet private room to divide the front and back, a large alfresco area outside perfect for summer, and soft delicate lighting with a background track of neo-jazz, there is something for everyone here for any time of the day. Staff are dressed in casual attire and always friendly. Even the manager gets in on the fun – waiting tables, joking with customers and having a shot with us, just because!

Maya Tequila Bar & Grill

Maya Tequila Bar & Grill Location: 74 Toorak Rd, South Yarra, VIC Contact: 03 9866 8836 Maya Tequila Bar and Grill may have been around in other guises previously, but let it be said now that things are changing. Under the helm of new owner Michael, Maya launches a two pronged attack as both a bar, and a restaurant. While most would consider this commonplace, the duo often comprises merely a few beers and a dash of wine, with unusual drinks orders receiving quizzical expressions from staff. Try ordering a Sazerac or and Old Fashioned beyond the bastions of established high cocktail establishments and you’ll be settling for scotch and dry. Not so here. With A, T and I propped in front of the extensively filled bar, littered with more Patron than a Ludacris video clip, we were spoiled for choice.

TFS was kindly invited to the cafe to try out their brunch offering, which extensively covers both American and Russian style dishes.

NBHD Neanderthal Location: 153 Commercial Rd, South Yarra, VIC 3141 Contact: 03 9826 4880 From where we’re standing at the moment, the Melbourne coffee scene is entering an exciting phase. In recent years Melbourne has moved well beyond the traditional latte and has embraced the 3rd wave movement, with the introduction of some quirky and intriguing alternative brewing methods. NBHD Neanderthal, run by the Byrne boys, is at the forefront of this movement, with the cafe having just recently launched a very cool nitrogen charged cold brew “on tap”.
