Grub Food Van – Winter Menu Launch

Written by THE FOOD SOCIETY on . Posted in $$ Moderately priced, Breakfast & Brunch, Fitzroy, Modern Australian

Grub Food Van Location: 87-89 Moor Street, Fitzroy, Melbourne, Victoria Contact: 03 9877 5102 Grub Food Van is refreshing change amongst a sea of clean, minimalist designer cafe’s that litter every suburb. Decorated by the owners themselves, it feels much like stepping into their house, which is apt as it was their rather expansive abode. The garden is served by the gleaming bodied Airstream, perfect for summer days or nights, whilst the warm greenhouse is filled with light and plant life, heated heartily from the fireplace. As if to top it all off, it’s also dog friendly inside so people and their pooches aren’t shivering outside. Grub Food Van’s pastry chef even makes biscuits for well behaved canine guests.

I am constantly astounded by the quality and diversity of food that is offered in Melbourne. Having recently returned from travelling and working overseas (where I had the pleasure of dining at quite a few Michelin-starred restaurants), I can comfortably say that Melbourne offers some of the best restaurants and cafes in the world, which, believe it or not, I much preferred over their Michelin-starred counterparts. This past month I have been very ‘busy’ re-acquainting my palette with Melbourne food. Here are a few favourites that I’d happily eat at (over and over) again: Hinoki Japanese Pantry Location: 279 Smith Street, Fitzroy, VIC 0065 Contact: 03 9417 4531 IMG_20150215_174219 Hinoki Japanese Pantry on Urbanspoon Fonda Mexican Location: 248 Swan Street, Richmond, VIC 3121 Contact: 03 9429 0085 IMG_20150224_204240 Fonda Mexican on Urbanspoon Jinda Thai Location: 7 Ferguson St, Abbotsford, VIC 3067 Contact: 03 9419 5899 Processed with VSCOcam with c2 preset Jinda Thai Restaurant on Urbanspoon

Market Lane Coffee Location: 163 Commercial Rd South Yarra, VIC 3141 Contact: 03 9804 7434 The low down: a minimalist institution, Market Lane Coffee is tucked away at the back of the gorgeous Prahan Market. Locals can head down for a quick fix or to the giant’s other shop, located within Victoria Market. Long blacks are divine, lattes spot on. Always delivers. IMAG0045 Market Lane Coffee on Urbanspoon Hinoki Japanese Pantry Location: 279 Smith Street Fitzroy, VIC 03065 Contact: 03 9417 4531 Fantastic value, top notch quality sushi, and a Japanese grocery all bundled into one. We’re absolutely in love with this place – for $45 the nigiri platter is enough to satisfy two or three hungry bellies. IMAG0053

Night Noodle Markets 2014

Melbourne Night Noodle Markets 2014 Location: Birrarung Marr Dates: November 14-30, 2014 Back with all the buzz and vibe from last year, the Night Noodle Markets returned to Melbourne this year with a bang. Lighting up the banks of the Yarra River in a new (and much better) location this year (Birrarung Marr), the festival boasted over 50 food stalls and food trucks representing dishes spanning Korea, Vietnam, China, India, Malaysia, Burma and Nepal. All of our favourite eateries returned (think Chin Chin, Mamak, Izakaya Den, Longrain and Gelato Messina), as well as some exciting newcomers (Kong, Charlie Dumpling and Mr. Miyagi). The festival was by far bigger and better than last year, with minimal wait times (on the days that we visited, there were hardly any lines), ample seating and enough space to lounge around on the grass while relaxing to the sounds of Melbourne’s top DJs.

DSC06955 Gelato Messina – Happy Taste Bud Time

We loved Gelato Messina’s bespoke creations last year, and this year was no exception. Messina’s ‘pot luck pies’ included tubs of goodness with cheeky names like ‘Bangkok Holla’, ‘Phuc King Tasty’ and ‘Happy Taste Bud Time’. Our Happy Taste Bud Time pot luck pies were huge, encompassing a deadly sweet mix of lychee sponge, mango puree, rambutan and coconut gelato, whipped salted coconut cream and a chewy coconut macaron.

Here’s to a quick wrap-up of our team’s recent favourites. Smith St Alimentari Location: 302 Smith St, Collingwood, VIC 3066 Contact: 03 9416 1666 Processed with VSCOcam with hb1 preset Housed in the former residence of Gorski & Jones, Smith St Alimentari is a cross between a local deli and bustling cafe. Whip up your own with the quality ingredients on display, take home one of the impressive pre-made meals (the quiches and lasagnes look sublime), or laze around in the beautiful cafe / restaurant space for breakfast or lunch. The egg white omelette is one of the better brunches we’ve had to date – packed with protein, dukkah, feta and pockets of smoked salmon. It’s a must order.

Shortstop x Jimmy Grants

Shortstop Donuts Location: 12 Sutherland St, Melbourne, VIC 3000 Jimmy Grants Location: 113 St David St Fitzroy VIC 3065 Two things these places share in common: they’re fast, convenient, and bang-on delicious. Shortstop’s crullers are simply to die for (though expect the honey x sea salt variety to be quite, well, salty; it’s not for everyone). And though the cinnamon donut looks much less jam-packed than some of the other varieties, it’s a must!

Hammer and Tong Location: Enter from Westgarth St, Rear 412 Brunswick St Contact: 03 9041 6033 In light of how lovely (and well-celebrated) Hammer and Tong’s brunch menu is, it’s a real shame that their dinner offering goes largely unnoticed. Plates are all meant for sharing, with a few highlights from the brekkie list featuring at night time (which means that you can still try out their soft shell crab burger while indulging in the other dishes).

The Lumber Yard

Written by THE FOOD SOCIETY on . Posted in $$$ A little bit fancy, American, Barbecue, British, Fitzroy, VICTORIA

The Lumber Yard represents the culmination of the efforts of Paul and David to exhibit some southern USA style cooking they’ve perfected outside their regular efforts at major events under the guise of Iron Bark.

Nestled in a room within the Worker’s club on Brunswick street, The Lumber Yard is a quiet, comforting space lovingly adorned with articles of olde. Note as well, an early model offset smoker barbeque in the corner as well, that can be calibrated for standard and reverse flow.

La Condesa Launch Party

La Condesa Taqueria Location: 234 Johnston Street Fitzroy, VIC 3065 Contact: 03 9419 5675 La Condesa pays homage to the buzzing bohemian quarter and vibrant nightlife of Condesa in Mexico City, where the latest in food, art and culture is showcased and young artists and entrepreneurs – known as condechis, come out to play. This modern Mexican Cantina boasts traditional flavours with a Fitzroy twist. We recently visited La Condesa to celebrate the launch of their latest venture, the Taqueria, which sits on 234 Johnston Street.

Yong Green Food Location: 421 Brunswick St, Fitzroy, VIC Contact: 03 9417 3338 Yong’s is your one stop shop for all things vegetarian: raw, vegan, gluten free – you name it, they’ve got it. The crowd rolls in and out fast, so stake your claim early or come during the quieter hours to ensure you grab a spot at one of the tables before things get a little too hectic.

Thai green curry ($18)
The Thai green curry was quite enjoyable – my organic tempeh came immersed in a light, not too creamy house-made Thai green curry paste characterised by quite an amped up level of spiciness. I must admit that I am not one to usually order tempeh (it is one of those tastes that takes a little getting used to), but I quite liked the pairing. All of this married well with a bowl of biodynamic brown rice with just enough outer crunchiness to add some texture.

Meatballs and Sons

Meatballs and Sons Location: 266 Brunswick St Fitzroy, VIC 3065 Contact: 03 9416 3006 Nestled in the crux of Fitzroy’s hip Brunswick Street dining scene, Meatballs and Sons has already garnered a solid following and reputation for serving up delicious meatballs, desserts and drinks to boot. Kano, who also designed the MissChu space, is the brains behind the warm, laid back interior of the double-storey restaurant, with stock-full shelves and paper wrapping adornments clearly drawing inspiration from the homeliness of old general stores. The place oozes warmth and cosiness, with a huge bar spanning the front area, an open kitchen to the back and a quaint fresh herb garden to the side.

Frolic Yoghurt Fitzroy Location: 365 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, VIC 3065 Contact: 03 9417 0097 Finally summer seems tantalisingly within our reach, and with that T and I were delighted to accept an invitation to drop by and savour all things froyo at Frolic Frozen Yoghurt, Fitzroy. Step in and you can’t help pausing to admire the feature wall – custom artwork sprawled across bare brick, so fitting and at home at its residence on Brunswick Street. Traverse further in, past the toppings bar (oh, so many choices – don’t worry, we’ll come back to that) and you’re ready to get down to business.

Little Creatures Dining Hall Location: 222 Brunswick St, Fitzroy, VIC Contact: 03 9417 5500 (no bookings policy) Only a glossy door divides the bustle of Brunswick Street from the expanse that is Little Creatures Dining Hall. The home of the Victorian brewery opens up to a humongous, informal concrete dining hall that buzzes with activity on the earlier days of the week and quickly becomes deafening from Thursdays to the weekend. The decor is simple, yet has a toned down Innocent Bystander-esque feel to it, with dark green lamps hanging from above and large wooden tables sprawled throughout.

Hammer and Tong

Amidst the intricate graffiti works that embellish its bright walls and surroundings, it’s a little difficult not to be automatically drawn to Hammer and Tong. From the gaping graffiti monster munching away at the window bar to the diagonally-placed tables squashed closely together, it’s a hip little café with an incredibly feisty attitude (and an even feistier menu to boot).
